Tom Kiernan, President of the National Parks Conservation Association has released the following statements regarding Wilderness Battlefield in Orange County, Virginia:
“After months of intense debate and a legal challenge led by the Wilderness Battlefield Coalition, we are pleased with Walmart’s decision this morning to abandon its plans to build a Superstore on a privately-owned portion of the Wilderness Battlefield in Orange County, Virginia, next to Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park.
“Pulitzer-Prize winning historian James McPherson has said that this site was in the nerve center of the Union Army during the battle of the Wilderness, which was as significant as the battle of Gettysburg. The Battle resulted in one of the most decisive moments of the U.S. Civil War, involved more than 150,000 soldiers, and resulted in 30,000 casualties.
“Today’s decision is a victory for protecting our priceless historic landscapes that tell our shared story. All involved now have the opportunity to work together to preserve this site so that it remains compatible with the national park's meaning and character. As we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the U.S. Civil War, I urge Americans to work together to protect these sacred places for our children and grandchildren to experience and enjoy in the future.”

2011 Chincoteague Island Seafood Festival
The 2011 Chincoteague Island Seafood Festival will be held on on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at Tom’s Cove Park.
Tickets for the festival will go on sale February 1 at $40 each. Seafood enthusiasts will have the opportunity to purchase tickets at $35 each if purchased on or before February 28.
The festival will provide a venue to sample oysters, clams, fish and other Virginia seafood. The annual event also offers opportunities for Shore businesses to promote their products and services and an arena for political leaders to meet and greet their constituents.

Kopek Coming to the Norva
Irish rock trio Kopek are bringing their brand of rock to the USA and will be in Norfolk at The Norva on Sunday, Jan 30.
Kopek is on the road through February with Hinder, My Darkest Days and Saving Abel. This tour will lead up to the release of their debut album White Collar Lies, due out March 1 on Religion Music via Sony Independent Network.

Salt Water Sportsman National Seminar Series Coming to Virginia
The Salt Water Sportsman National Seminar Series will bring its DelMarVa edition to Va Beach on Saturday, January 22. The Virginia Beach Convention Center will host the all day presentation inside Ballroom One.
George Povermo, Editor at Large for Salt Water Sportsman Magazine will headline the program, along with Ric Burnley, Regional Editor for SWS.
Local speakers are to include Captain Jorj Head,John Oughton, Chris Newsome, Blake Hayden, Capt.Chandler Hogg, Dr. Ken Neill III, and Harry Vernon III.

Eastern Shore of Virginia Receives New Weather Radio Transmitter
NOAA’s National Weather Service has completed the testing phase for a new 1000-watt NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards transmitter, increasing service to areas that had limited or no coverage along the Virginia and Lower Maryland Eastern Shores. Now life-saving watch and warning services will be available to recreational and commercial mariners navigating the Atlantic coastal waters in this area.
This transmitter will serve Accomack and Northampton Counties in Virginia, including the cities of Wachapreague and Chincoteague. It will also serve Somerset and Worcester Counties in Maryland, including Pocomoke City and the Atlantic coastal waters between Ocean City, Md., and Oyster, Va. The transmitter will broadcast on a frequency of 162.525 MHz, usually Channel 6 on most NOAA Weather Radio receivers.
“NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards is vitally important for both recreational and commercial boaters navigating the Atlantic coastal waters,” said William Sammler, warning coordination meteorologist at the forecast office in Wakefield, Va. “Weather can change quickly and now everyone will be able to keep tuned to the latest forecasts and watches and warnings ─ and take appropriate action.”

Riptides Square Dance Club Open House Dance in Virginia Beach
Are you looking for something fun to do?
The Riptides Square Dance Club will be hosting an Open House Dance on February 4, 2011, at Bayside Presbyterian Church, in Virginia Beach. No Square Dancing experience is necessary and there is no charge for this event.
Crown Record recording artist and Square Dance Caller, Matt Worley, will instruct the new dancers on the steps and experienced dancers will be on hand to help guide the way. The evening will also feature demos of regular club level square dancing by the more experienced dancers. Dancing is open to everyone from 10 to 100, and the fun starts at 7:30PM. Need a partner? Single dancers are also welcome.
Bayside Presbyterian Church is located at 1400 Ewell Rd., Virginia Beach, VA.
